American Racing Equipment was founded in 1956 by Romeo Palamides, a drag racing innovator. Romeo, working in San Francisco from Jim Ellison's small machine shop with engineering innovator Tom Griffith, evolved into an aftermarket wheel company.
Platinum Equity investment group later acquired American Racing Equipment Inc. in June 2005.
